The story covers the final four months of Lincoln’s life in 1865, during the closing stages of the American Civil War. As the war’s end approaches, Lincoln is determined to secure the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which would permanently abolish slavery. He faces a race against time: if peace comes before the amendment is ratified, returning Confederate states may block it.
In January 1865, Lincoln works behind the scenes to rally support for the amendment in the House of Representatives, knowing that early peace could save lives but risk undoing emancipation. He navigates political opposition, including from border-state Republicans and Democrats, and must balance his moral conviction with pragmatic political maneuvering IMDb. The film also explores his personal life, including tensions with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln (Sally Field), and his strained relationship with his son Robert (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).
